Importation of controlled substances

For persons travelling to Australia with medicines, please refer to: Travellers.

Narcotic, psychotropic drugs, some precursor chemicals, and several other drugs require import permission into Australia. A list of controlled substances has been provided as a guide.

There are several types of applications which may be required:

Example 1: Narcotic/Psychotropic

Narcotic and psychotropic drugs require a licence and permit to import. The Licence is valid up to 12 months and the permit is required for each import of each drug and/or preparation type.

Example 2: Anabolic/Androgenic

Anabolic/Androgenic drugs require a permit for each import of each drug and/or preparation type. A licence is not required to import anabolic/androgenic drugs.

Example 3: other controlled drugs

Other controlled drugs, such as growth hormones, require a permit for each import of each drug and/or preparation type. A licence is not required to import anabolic/androgenic drugs.

Example 4: Precursor Chemicals

Precursor chemicals require a licence and permit to import. The Licence is valid up to 12 months and the permit is required for each import of each drug and/or preparation type.

Example 5: Antibiotics

Antibiotic drugs are not included in the List of Prohibited Substances; however, they require a permit for each import of each drug. A licence is not required to import antibiotic drugs.
