Overview

On 11 October 2019, the Australian Government launched the Kava Pilot Program, easing restrictions on kava importation to improve access to kava in Australia and strengthen engagement with Pacific partner countries.

As part of the pilot, the government sought feedback on proposed arrangements for the commercial importation of kava.

About the consultation

The Phase 2 consultation invited stakeholders to provide views on proposed commercial importation settings and the regulatory framework that would support the next stage of the Kava Pilot Program. Feedback was used to inform policy development and implementation planning.

The consultation focused on:

  • Proposed arrangements for commercial kava imports.
  • Regulatory and operational requirements for importers.
  • Consumer access and supply considerations.
  • Supporting the objectives of the Kava Pilot Program and Australia's Pacific engagement initiatives.
