About this statement

The Cost Recovery Implementation Statement (CRIS) explains how the Department of Health, Disability and Ageing implements cost recovery for regulatory activities associated with the Medicinal Cannabis Scheme.

The statement provides transparency about the costs of administering the scheme and how those costs are recovered from regulated entities. 

Cost Recovery for Medicinal Cannabis Regulation

Cost recovery involves government agencies charging individuals or organisations for some or all of the efficient costs of delivering regulatory activities. This may include application fees, annual charges and other regulatory fees.

The Medicinal Cannabis Scheme operates under the Narcotic Drugs Act 1967 and includes licensing, permit administration, compliance and other regulatory activities. 

Financial and performance reporting

The CRIS includes:

  • information about cost recovery arrangements
  • financial performance reporting
  • non-financial performance information
  • financial forecasts for future years
  • details about the ongoing administration of the Medicinal Cannabis Scheme.

The statement contains financial forecasts for:

  • 2024–25
  • 2025–26
  • 2026–27
  • 2027–28.
